When to Call a Plumber for a Blocked Drain?

A house or any other building should have a drainage system to allow the wastewater to flow out of the pipe and the fresh water to come in. However, the drainage system gets blocked, if not properly maintained. In such a case, you would need to seek the help of a professional plumber who knows how to fix the blocked drains.

There are many problems that a blocked drain can cause.

  1. Odor: In case the sewage drainage system has been affected, there is a good chance that your house would be filled with a very bad odor that you would not like to have near you at all.

  2. Health issues: In case there is a problem with pipes related to incoming water, there might arise some health issues.

  3. Leaks: Depending on the problem, there is a chance that either the wall or ceiling or roof start to leak due to a blocked drain. This can damage the affected area badly as it can lead to a need to either repaint or even properly repair the property that has been damaged.

  4. Electrical wiring: As water reacts readily with electricity, any wiring system installed inside the walls would be at risk. This means that you could end up having a major disaster in your hands because as the wires short circuit, anything working from it is also bound to be affected and in most cases, it is bound to have a mini explosion causing the device to fail altogether.

  5. Building damage: Lastly, a long-term problem can cause the leaking drains especially when the leakage is severe and underground. As this kind of problem is hard to detect and hence many a time it can lead to some kind of deterioration of the foundation of the house causing the need of heavy investment to keep the building safe.

What does plumber do?

When the problem arises, a quick call of action is needed. In case of a blocked drain, a plumber needs to be called right away. The plumber would come to your house and check the drainage system for any kind of inconsistencies. If he finds anything that is blocking the drainage, he would be able to fix it in very little time with the help of the equipment that he has. Plumbers are normally very efficient and in case of a minor problem, they would be able to solve the problem in less than a few hours. But in case the problem is major and special services like excavation is required, then the work can go on for a longer period of time. In that case, you may need to vacate the area for a little while at any time the water usage might be stopped to isolate the problem and stop it from escalating.

But sometimes, the problem is in the pipes that have been laid by the council. It is the plumber's duty to first inspect what is the cause of the problem and then determine the jurisdiction of the pipe. If the work comes under the council, then only call them. If you call them first, they would ask you to first get a plumber to check the problem. In case, the responsibility of the damaged pipe goes to the council then the council will take the appropriate steps to rectify the situation without any need for you to intervene anymore.

There are many problems that are caused by a blocked drain and hence people should keep in mind that due diligence should be exercised while doing any kind of repairs.
